What is Queen of the Furrow?

The Queen of the Furrow is not just a plowing competion--it is an ambassador progam and platform where young women in agriculture get the oprotunity to educate their community about local agriculture and encouge them to get involved.  A long standing tradition in Hastings County and other counties in Ontario, the comepetition was originally started to encouage young women to get involved in agriculture in the 1970's and has continued to do so fifty years later.

The Queen of the Furrow is a representative and ambassador for her local Plowmen's Association and agricutural community.  Her duty is to educate and promote local agricuture in her community by attending community events, holiday parades, and presenting at schools, clubs and other community associations.  The Queen of the Furrow, alongside the Princess of the Furrow, is a role model for girls and other young women who are currently, or are interested in becoming a part of the agricuture community.  

Through this opprotunity you will make life-long friendships and industry connections, gain meaningful life skills, build your resume, and boost your self-confidence!

Queen of the Furrow Rules & Regulations

• Must be 18-25 years old.

• DO NOT have to live on a farm

• Attend as many local Hastings County Plowmen's Association meetings as possible.

• Attend the next year's Hastings County Plowing Match and Farm Show from start to finish.

• Attend as many local Santa Claus Parades as possible. Signage is provided.

• Attend "Staking day" a week prior to the Plowing Match to help stake the site. You will have advanced notice of the date of this.

• The Queen is encouraged to visit schools and local community groups to educate children and adults on agriculture, the Plowing Match, farm safety, where your food comes from, etc. The Queen shall choose her own topics when visiting schools and community groups.

• The Queen is encouraged to seek out local community groups to speak at Community Events.

• The Queen is encouraged to contact local fair boards and inquire about speaking at opening ceremonies, handing out ribbons at livestock shows, etc.

• The Queen is encouraged to visit any other neighbouring "County Plowing Matches" that she would like to attend.

• The Queen must wear her crown and Sash to all "Oueen" activities and wear the required dress code while representing the Hastings County Plowmen's Association.

• The Queen is not permitted to drink alcoholic beverages while on Queen Duty.

• The Queen will be required to write a biography for the Hastings County Plowing Match and Farm Show website along with a photograph of her choice.

• The Queen is required to write thank you cards to all sponsors of the gifts that she receives. (Hastings County Plowmen's Association will pay for the postage and expenses)

• The Queen is expected to compete at the International Plowing Match in the Ontario Queen of the Furrow competition the year following her crowning (for example, the Queen crowned in 2026 will compete at the IPM in September 2027).

• Most of all HAVE FUN! BE CREATIVE and use every opportunity that this experience can give you.

Princess of the Furrow Rules & Regulations

• Must be 13-17 years old.

• DO NOT have to live on a farm

• Attend as many local Hastings County Plowmen's Association meetings as possible.

• Attend the next year's Hastings County Plowing Match and Farm Show from start to finish.

• Attend as many local Santa Claus Parades as possible. Signage is provided.

• Attend "Staking day" a week prior to the Plowing Match to help stake the site. You will have advanced notice of the date of this.

• The Princess is encouraged to join the Queen at any community events, speaking engagements, neighbouring "County Plowing Matches", etc that she is attending. 

• The Princess must wear her Crown and Sash to all "Princess" activities and wear the required dress code while representing the Hastings County Plowmen's Association.

• The Princess will be required to write a biography for the Hastings County Plowing Match and Farm Show website along with a photograph of her choice.

• The Princess is required to write thank you cards to all sponsors of the gifts that she receives. (Hastings County Plowmen's Association will pay for the postage and expenses)
